Transport Overview

Australia has a sophisticated transport infrastructure at all levels. Public transport in the various States is excellent and of First world standards.

Cars are readily available and can be found from the very cheap to the very expensive. It is recommended that you buy a “cheap” first car when you arrive. This will allow you to settle in and get to know the market before possibly buying a second more expensive car. Avoid buying an “import”, these models come in mainly from Japan and whilst in very good condition and very affordable, they attract higher insurance costs and higher costs of servicing and spare parts..

A source of good second hand cars can also come from the State Government Departments. Generally vehicles are sold after 40,000 kms or 2 years of age, which comes sooner.

It is recommended that you get your Driving Licence as soon as possible, it is a very useful piece of identification. Licence requirements vary from State to State but there are moves to unify the regulations across the nation.
